FOUR MAKEUP MISTAKES BEGINNERS MUST AVOID

FOUR MAKEUP MISTAKES BEGINNERS MUST AVOID

Like every other artistic endeavour, great makeup requires abiding by certain long-standing practices (most of which are more common than expected).

Ironically, the commonality of these practices accounts for their neglect by many beginners in professional makeup. For the record, failure to observe these practices has nothing to do with skill in the craft.

So while individual artists may possess appreciable skill with respect to the actual application of makeup, that reality may not always translate to client satisfaction in terms of the general outcomes of work done. Ultimately, this is where the line between skill and experience is drawn.

In no particular order, here are four of the common mistakes beginners make in makeup artistry.

1.    Reuse of unwashed brushes -

Hygiene ranks among the top considerations when it comes to routines affecting the human body, both internally and externally. This includes makeup. The brush is the primary tool that brings makeup in contact with the skin surface on which it is applied.

To this effect therefore, brushes must be kept in good usable condition before reuse. Advisably, after each session, all brushes used should be thoroughly cleaned and dried before safe-keeping for reuse. This ensures that all matter accumulated by the bristles during previous usage, most especially bacteria from the skin, don't settle and breed there. Instructively, these bacteria retain the potential to cause several skin complications ranging from breakouts to severe infections. As a professional makeup artist, it is recommended to have as many brushes as possible, depending on the base of your clientele. In other words, for every client, a fresh brush ought to be used.

2.    Sharing makeup

This practice also touches on hygiene and just like the first mistake, many beginners fall to the temptation of using the same brushes and tools between clients. The adverse effect of this largely inadvertent but very grievous mistake has led to loss of jobs for some professionals and low referral for others. In order to maintain the reputation of your brand and ensure the safety of your clients, making provision for different tools for every client is paramount. In exceptional circumstances where you have to use the same tools between clients (for instance, during out-of-office services), then steps must be taken to ensure proper cleaning and sterilisation of tools. The use of isopropyl alcohol for sterilisation and disinfecting purposes has been found to yield commendable results in this regard.

3.    One-style-fits-all approach -

Majority of beginners fall prey to this mistake. It must be understood that preference is one of the hallmarks of individual living. This applies to makeup as well. So while some clients prefer a more natural look and therefore opt for lighter makeup, others would go for a heavier mask to ensure the concealment of natural features including spots and scars.
Bottom line: There's nothing like “too much makeup” or similar sentiments. What is constant is individual difference and by extension, individual preference. Fortunately, makeup technology has undergone tremendous improvement to cater to as much array of varying preferences as possible. Therefore, as a professional makeup artist, your responsibility is to sort and access products that achieve a wide range of results for your teeming clientele. 4.    Applying makeup to bare skin -

Most beginners without experience on the effects of bare-skin makeup application commonly fall prey to this mistake. However, experience underscores the necessity of prepping the skin before applying makeup. When makeup is applied without prepping, there is always a high likelihood of the failure to achieve a natural finish. For instance, if applied on dry skin, this would most likely result in brittle patches breaking through the makeup. Conversely, if applied on oily skin, the makeup would invariably melt off with time. Generally, applying makeup without first executing a skin prep brings about an untidy result thereby jeopardising one's professional credibility.
Beyond aesthetic considerations, makeup products generally contain irritants which, in the event of direct application to the skin, could prove really disturbing, especially for sensitive skin types. In other words, skin preps provide the necessary protection for the skin against these irritants.

Fun fact: With skin prep in place, you can even skip applying primer!
On the question of how to prep the skin prior to applying makeup, this is dependent on the skin type in question.

At Pet Signature Makeup Studio, we provide a comprehensive guide on how to navigate the various skin types for an ideal skin prep.
